    NEW [30 Jan 2004|12:54am]

Hi. I'm new here. Thought this looked like an interesting community and the subject is very broad, which is cool.

Is anyone here into nonfiction? I enjoy reading it alot more than fiction. I like books on popular/youth culture, music, current events, new agey/paranormal type stuff, cosmology and even astrophysics. Most of the reading communities are strictly fiction, so I was looking for people who wanted to discuss/reccommend NF stuff.

At the Forums4Fans.com messageboards, we Ron and Hermione fans call ourselves Sidekicks. Recently, after reading the set report posted at TLC, we decided to create a petition to send to the production team at HPPoA. Well, read the petition below and click the link to sign! Keep the hug!

Keep The Hug in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"

To the entire Executive Production team in control of Editing 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban': Alfonso Cuarón, Michael Barnathan, Chris Columbus, David Heyman, Callum McDougall, Mark Radcliffe, Tanya Seghatchian and Steven Weisberg,

As die-hard Harry Potter fans, it has been our joy and privilege to see our favourite books transformed into the most wonderful movies. We are following the reports about your fresh approach to the Harry Potter novels with delight, in the main, and of course, with great anticipation. Based on comments Mr Cuarón has made in interviews and articles, we believe that the delicate balance of the Harry/Ron/Hermione friendship and its ensuing dynamic in the book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, is well-understood. This is very reassuring for us, as we are naturally concerned that the movies should remain true to the spirit and the messages of the book, as well as just the storylines.

Recently, however, we have read an article* that alarmed us greatly. It stated that the hug between Ron and Hermione (which exists, albeit differently, in the book: see the first page of Chapter 15) is in danger of being cut from the upcoming movie. We, being what many call Sidekicks - supporters of an eventual romantic relationship between Ron and Hermione - believe that cutting such an important scene from 'Azkaban' would cause huge disappointment, not only for us, but for all fans of the Harry Potter world, and this book in particular. "The Hug" is the key moment lead up to by the tumultuous relationship of Ron and Hermione over the course of the year. They fight, they bicker, they are at loggerheads throughout, but they make up in the end, because they know that there are more important things like friendship to be thought of. That is a message which should not be diminished, much less forgotten.

Without "the Hug", 'Azkaban' will be sorely lacking. We, the undersigned, petition the Executive Production team of 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' to keep this lovely moment, "The Hug", in the movie, thus retaining the dramatic narrative as portrayed in JK Rowling's fantastic book intact, and vastly increasing our enjoyment of the finished article.

he can write, too [17 Jan 2004|01:01am]

Just finished reading "Shopgirl", by Steve Martin, and i have to say, i am impressed. I'm not really up on what's hot as far as books go, but since we always seem to have some of the current ones at work, and i can read them on my breaks (hehe), i do manage to read the occasional bestseller.
Martin's writing style is not difficult at all, which makes it easy to get right into the book. I did find (especially when i first started the book) that the way he writes is somewhat "distant", for lack of a better word. You get a sense of the characters, but i felt as if i knew them as an outsider, instead of being inside their heads.
Having said that, the book is devastating (or was to me, anyway) in the story, and in the lessons the 2 main characters learn about life, and love. Despite what i said above, when the book reached it's finale, i was literally aching.
The story is a fairly simple one, about a girl dating a man somewhat older than her, and the two of them figuring out some things during the course of their relationship. Martin makes some poignant observations on different types of people, modern society, and in a somewhat more understated way, the effects of war on a person.
There is also a good deal of humor, which should be no surprise. The surprising thing to me was how subtle a lot of that humor was, as most of it was in the observations of the different characters.
Overall, this is the best work of fiction that i've read in a long time. Highly recommended.

Harry Potter poll for those who are interested [16 Jan 2004|04:57pm]

    [ mood | bored ]

I just finished reading the HP series for the second time, and they're such great books! If you haven't read them yet, I'd highly recommend them. Anyway, I was interested on everyone's views on the books, so I made a poll:

Poll #234412 Harry Potter poll (answer only if you've read at least one of the books)

Who are your favorite Harry Potter character(s)?

Who are your least favorite Harry Potter characters?

Which Harry Potter book is your absolute favorite?

    HP and the Sorceror's Stone
HP and the Chamber of Secrets
HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban
HP and the Goblet of Fire
HP and the Order of the Phoenix
Don't particularly like any of them
    Can't decide

    RotK [23 Dec 2003|08:07am]

I saw The Return of the King last night. On the whole, I thought it was great. There were a few major discrepancies, however, mainly that it was so dramatically different from Tolkien's books, and that this difference was usually unneccessary. But I'll say no more, except that I cried at the end.
Having read the series seven times, it was great (although also sad) to see it end. The books make me cry all the time, because I have become so tied up in this story after so many years of...hmm...almost being a part of it, I could say.
Anyway, I would highly recommend you all see this movie, but beware: if you have read the books, you may be a little disappointed.
    Anyway, happy watching!
